I was on the phone yesterday with my website whiz friend (I need all the help I can get at times!) and he asked me what I thought of the Dad Bod. “The WHAT?” I asked. Now I know I have my head in the sand at times and I’m not the sharpest gal on the block, but how have I missed this phenomenon?
And, if you are also asking what I am talking about, please don’t be shy in letting me know so I won’t feel like such a complete idiot. So, to enlighten you and to help me wrap my head around this whole thing, this is what I’m talking about. . . .
The “dad bod” is the new way to describe that guy who used to be the athlete with the athletic body, but has let it fall a bit to the wayside. He’s the guy that you see around who you used to know was the high school football player, baseball, or lacrosse player who has let his workout routine be replaced by pizza and beer. Now, you get the picture and I’m sure you can “picture” in your mind a few males with the dad bod.
But still, ewwwwww. It has some weird ring to it.
This whole thing started at Clemson University by a sophomore who wrote an article for her school paper entitled “Why Girls Love the Dad Bod”. In the paper she described the dad bod as a “a nice balance between a beer gut and working out.” Now, don’t forget, we are talking about college aged young men. Not forty something year old dads who hold down real jobs, volunteer in the community, have children at home who they are hauling children to tee ball or soccer practice, and maybe only have time to be the weekend warriors. So, I’m giving these real dads a little break on their “bods” because I know how hectic and crazy their weeks are. I’ve seen it first hand in my own home. These men work, take care of families, volunteer, exercise and have a full life. Some do not have the six-pack of their highschool days. They are at the stage of their lives when they are actual dads so their focus and energy goes to a lot of different activities. So, these are the guys who might be allowed to get away with having a dad bod.
But college guys walking around campus getting oogled from the girls? These guys are being “rewarded” for giving up their workouts, being a bit lazy, downing pizza and burritos and beer. Not so sure I’m ready to give these guys a pass!
The whole dad bod thing also brings to light the complete double standard we women face on this old body image controversy. The dad bod craze seems to say that it’s okay for these young guys to let themselves go a little soft. Girls still find them attractive. And it’s all okay. Not to get on my soapbox here, but that’s never been okay for the females. There is definitely no “mom bod” craze where the guys are talking about how cute and hot a female is because she’s a little soft, has a little muffin top or lost the lean look of her high school days. This never happens. Our society basically stalks any new mom to see how she’s done in shedding any baby weight, how she looks as a mom and accuses a female of being lazy for any growth in the middle. It is totally a double standard!
Dom Mazzetti has a really funny YouTube video titled, “Dad bod is worse than ebola”. He describes the guys with dad bods as human Uggs. He’s totally right in his description in this glorification of mediocrity. I would place the video here, but he drops a few too many “F bombs” for me to post. If you want a little laugh over the weekend, check it out!
Now that I’ve been educated on the Dad Bod, and perhaps enlightened you on this new craze, I’m sure you are mulling this over thanking me for this groundbreaking view of such an important aspect of today’s society.
